The Royal Society:

As the UK national academy for Science, the Royal Society’s mission is to recognise, promote and support excellence in science for the benefit of humanity. For many years, the Society has supported science, public engagement and policy on both climate change and biodiversity loss and both these areas form a focus for addressing the environmental sustainability of the Society’s own operations. Marisa will describe the rationale, approach and data needs for estimating the (mostly indirect) biodiversity footprint of the Society’s operations. She will also explore what a biodiversity footprint tells us, in addition to an estimate of greenhouse gas emissions alone, and some of the opportunities and barriers for incorporating biodiversity into an Environmental Sustainability Strategy. Network member Marisa Goulden, Environmental Sustainability Programme Manager, The Royal Society will be presenting.

The University of Oxford's Gardens, Libraries, and Museums (GLAM)

The University of Oxford's Gardens, Libraries, and Museums (GLAM) are not only cultural and academic treasures but also play a vital role in promoting sustainability and biodiversity. Comprising iconic institutions such as the Bodleian Libraries, the Ashmolean Museum, the Museum of Natural History, and the Botanic Gardens, GLAM provides rich environments for learning, conservation, and community engagement.  Currently, GLAM is developing a comprehensive Biodiversity Action Plan to enhance its contribution to the University’s ambitious sustainability goals of biodiversity net gain by 2035. This initiative focuses on understanding our current biodiversity footprint (direct and indirect) and then developing approaches to support our net gain targets. This session will provide a quick introduction to GLAM in Oxford, an overview of the University’s biodiversity methodology, insight into GLAM’s biodiversity footprint and our biodiversity action plan.  Network member Jon Ray, GLAM Environmental Sustainability Manager, Oxford University Gardens, Libraries & Museums (GLAM) will be presenting.

All members are welcome to attend, regardless of previous experience or knowledge on this topic.  This session will be of benefit to all network members, whatever your size and scope of operations/activity.  From organisations just starting off to those already delivering biodiversity initiatives there will be lots to share and collaborate on, from identifying collective challenges to learning from other approaches.
