We are delighted to invite you to our one day conference, Buildings for the Future, an inspirational day of sharing, showcasing, discussions and problem solving for those in the not-for-profit sector and beyond.
The day is relevant for people working to make their buildings more sustainable, resilient and energy efficient in the face of climate change. This will cover heritage buildings, new builds, or rented properties and will include targeted sessions for those at different stages of the sustainability journey. Our aim is that you will be equipped with practical ideas and useful connections to take away and apply to your own buildings and projects.
We will begin with an opening talk from the Watershed’s Director, Dick Penny, followed by case studies from successful projects, a panel discussion on building performance, and a series of practical workshops. And (it goes without saying) plenty of time for networking.

Workshops
A) Energy monitoring and reporting – building the business case (Julie’s Bicycle)
Catherine Bottrill, Creative Green Lead at Julie’s Bicycle will be leading a practical workshop on the importance of effective energy monitoring and reporting.
The workshop will cover:
The value of monitoring – what is the purpose? e.g. making the business case for a new project, seeing what difference an energy saving action has made, communicating environmental performance etc.
Designing your monitoring systems – what do you want to know? what information do you need?
Reporting results – who needs to know? how do you present results?
B) The Living Building Challenge – a framework for performance-based outcomes (Elementa Consulting)
The Living Building Challenge (LBC) is administered by the International Living Future Institute, an organisation founded on the principle that there is only one future for all people, everywhere. The emergence and discussions around the ‘performance gap’ here in the UK have left many owners and occupiers searching for answers of how to close and eliminate performance gaps between the desired and actual result. As the most aggressive environmental certification system in the world, LBC was specifically created to validate projects based on their actual performance through testing, metering and a rigorous audit trail of documentation. The good news is that these tools and lessons can be adapted and specified into any owner’s project brief and design criteria. This workshop will explore who these principles can be applied to current or imminent projects in the room.
Site Tour to Aardman Studios Site tour will run from 1.30 until 3.40pm.
This site visit will be led by Arup and will offer insights into the design of Aardman Studios’ new energy-efficient building – one that is proactively managed to maximise sustainability. We will walk from Watershed along Bristol’s harbour area stopping at Aardman Studios to learn about the building’s environmentally-focused design and operation from both engineers who developed its sustainability features and those who manage and work in the building.

This event is for member organisations of Fit for the Future Network only. Colleagues within member organisations who have not previously been to a FFTF event are welcome.
Cancellation policy
The event is free to attend but there is a fee of £60 for those that cancel within 10 days of the event or do not show up on the day.
